Rules & Scoring

Pickleball's rules are few, but three of them decide almost every beginner point: the two-bounce rule, the kitchen rule, and the serve rules. Add the scoring call and you can walk onto any court in the world and fit right in.

One thing to master: the two-bounce rule and the score call. Say the three numbers out loud before every serve and the rest becomes muscle memory.

What you'll learn

The technique

The two-bounce rule

After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before anyone may volley. Serve → return bounces → third shot off the bounce. This single rule is why the serving team waits at the baseline while the returning team charges the net.

The kitchen rule

You may stand in the kitchen any time — you just cannot VOLLEY (hit the ball out of the air) while touching it or its line. A ball that bounces in the kitchen can be played from inside it.

Scoring

Games go to 11, win by 2; only the serving team scores in traditional scoring. In doubles both partners serve before the ball passes to the other team (except the very first service turn of the game).

The call

Three numbers before every doubles serve: your score, their score, then 1 or 2 for which server you are. The game starts at 0-0-2. Saying it out loud isn't optional etiquette — it prevents half of all rec-play disputes.
