Court Positioning & Movement

At advanced levels, most points are decided by where players stand before the ball is hit. Two players moving as a unit — side to side, forward and back — leave no seam to hit through. Two better hitters who move independently lose to them every time.

One thing to master: move WITH your partner, like a rope connects you. The gap only opens when one of you moves alone.

What you'll learn

The technique

The invisible rope

Imagine an 8-foot rope between you and your partner. Ball goes wide — you BOTH shift that way, the far player sliding toward the middle. One player drops back for a lob — both drop. The seam between you is the target advanced teams aim at; the rope keeps it closed.

Own the middle

Middle balls cause hesitation, and hesitation loses points. Default: the forehand in the middle takes it — but the CALL beats the rule. An early 'mine!' from either player ends the discussion.

Advance in stages

From the baseline, you and your partner move up together behind good drops (Lesson 11), pausing balanced in the transition zone whenever the opponents can attack. Arriving at the line together, balanced, is the win condition of the first half of every point.

Depth discipline at the line

Hold an inch behind the kitchen line — drifting two steps back invites balls at your feet; hugging the line with your toes invites momentum faults. The inch is where volleys are legal and dinks are reachable.
